Quilts & Auctions

This quilt I'm working on will be autographed by choral leaders on our Board, and auctioned off during a silent auction. My boss thinks it'll be popular with choral conductors. Normally, I don't take a buyer into account--either they'll like it or they won't--but this time, I chose subtle colors for the background, something that could fit into anyone's home. I usually don't care, but we all know that people who are unfamiliar with art quilts do seem to take a "will this match my home" approach to buying, being unfamiliar with what it's really worth, and I want this to go for what it's valued as quilts tend to be bought under value at auctions like these.

Not to denigrate traditional-style quilts, but those who are unfamiliar with art quilts just don't always "get" it.
Do you find yourself having to explain that "Hey, this isn't a bedcovering?"

There is SOOOOOO much "quilts-are-
things-that-old-grannies-make-for-their
-beds" mindset out there from people who know diddly squat about quilting. However, sometimes, quilters aren't much better! Especially the hardcore "traditional is the only kind" quilters. You go girl!

Even traditional quilts don't get respect. After all, you can buy them from Odd Lots for $20.

Ditto to all of the above. Yes we are under-valued, but I keep hoping maybe some day the world will wake up & realize how much more work we put into these pieces of ART, than say.... your average abstract painting? Now I don't want to make all those abstract painters out there angry, but think about it. We wash & dye, or paint our fabric. Cut it up. arrange it, to our satisfaction, stitch, manipulate, sew, embellish AND quilt it, & this all takes way more time than that abstract of the same dimension, that sells for 10 times the price, & ours just cost 10 times more in time AND materials to make. Sorry for the rant.
