I finally figured out what to do with the background and went with stylized mimosa tree leaves--like the ones I remember from our family's country home in Virginia. My fave part is her hair. I

Oh, congratulations, Elle! How exciting! I love what you did with the quilting - especially the background. It does seem, with the color and the little pieces of brown fabric, as if there is a tree with branches hanging down behind her! Her hair is wonderful, too. Loved the close up view.
